How the Wingfoil World Championship Titles 2022 Can be Won in Brazil

Both the Surf-Freestyle and Surf-Slalom disciplines reach their climax at this final event of 2022. This will be the fifth Surf-Salom event of the season and the third meet for the Surf-Slalom riders.

Here’s the World Championship situation in each discipline:

SURF-FREESTYLE

In winning the last event in Tarifa, Paula Novotna secured enough points to claim her first World Championship. Nia Suardiaz is secure in second, as is Flora Artzner in third.

In the men’s competition, after four different event winners from four events, the situation is more open.

CURRENT STANDINGS:
MEN:
1 Gollito Estredo (VEN) 2,570 points
2 Balz Muller (CHE) 2,350
3 Malo Guenole (FRA) 2,320
4 Christopher MacDonald (USA) 2,160
5= Xavier Corr (ESP) 2,120
5= Camille Bouyer (RRD) 2,120

WOMEN:
1 Paula Novotna (CZE) 3,000 (World Champion)
2 Nia Suardiaz (ESP) 2,740
3 Flora Artzner (FRA) 2,310
4 Orane Ceris (FRA) 1,860
5 Kylie Belloeuvre (FRA) 1,420

SURF-FREESTYLE WINNING SCENARIOS
MEN:

It is confirmed that Balz Muller will not be competing in Brazil, so therefore the the focus falls only onto Gollito Estredo, Malo Guenole and Christopher MacDonald for the World Championship.

  • If Gollito finishes in the top three in Brazil he will be World Champion.
  • If Gollito finishes fourth in Brazil, Malo Guenole needs to win to become World Champion.
  • If Gollito finishes fifth in Brazil, Malo needs to finish second or better to become World Champion.
  • Christopher MacDonald would need to win Brazil and for Gollito to finish fifth or worse, and Malo third or worse, to become World Champion.

Essentially, looking at the two leading contenders, if Malo doesn’t reach the semi-finals, Gollito will be World Champion, even if he has his worst result of the season. If they both reach the semis then it will be very exciting. Malo would need to win his semi to keep a chance, while Gollito could still lose that heat and be World Champion.

WOMEN:

Paula Novotna is already World Champion.
Nia Suardiaz is secure in second, and Flora Artzner in third.

SURF-SLALOM

After previous events in Leucate, France and Silvaplana, Switzerland, Titouan Galea and Francesco Cappuzzo have one win each, while Flora Artzner won both events in the women’s. (No discards from three events).

CURRENT STANDINGS
MEN:
1 Titouan Galea (FRA) 1,960
2 Francesco Cappuzzo (ITA) 1,920
3 Camille Bouyer (FRA) 1,880
4 Mathis Ghio (FRA) 1,750

WOMEN:
1 Flora Artzner (FRA) 2,000
2 Nia Suardiz (ESP) 1,880
3 Paula Novotna (CZE) 1,810

SURF-SLALOM WINNING SCENARIOS
MEN:

Titouan Galea has a win and second place this season, whereas Francesco Cappuzzo has a win and a third position, so, simply, if Titouan wins in Brazil, he is World Champion.

If Francesco wins in Taiba and Titouan finishes second or worse, Francesco will be World Champion. (They would be tied on points, but the tie will be broken in favour with Francesco as he will have beaten Titouan more times, 2 vs 1.) Francesco would also be World Champion if he finishes in second, Titouan is third and Camille finishes fourth or worse.)

If Camille wins wins in Taiba, Francesco finishes second and Titouan in third, all three would be tied on points and the tie would be broken in favour of Camille for winning the last event.

Mathis Ghio also has a very, very slim chance. If the French rider wins in Taiba, Titouan finishes eighth or worse and Francesco finishes seventh or worse, Mathis could take the title.

WOMEN:

After winning both previous events this season, Flora Artzner simply needs to finish in fourth position or better to become World Champion.

If Flora finishes fifth or worse and Nia wins, Nia would become the World Champion.
