Tow-in Surf Foil was the name of the game for day two of the GWA Wingfoil World Cup in New Zealand!
Despite the forecast looking positive, the wind did not show up until 4pm for day two of the GWA Wingfoil World Cup in New Zealand. The day was filled with alternative activities, including a Tow-in Surf Foil competition where the top riders participated.
By mid-afternoon the wind picked up to around 12 knots and men’s round 1 was first in sequence. However halfway through the heat the conditions dropped and the heat was cancelled. Despite being kept on standby for most of the day, the wind conditions unfortunately did not improve.
Whilst the wind was not playing ball, the athletes did make the most of the situation by participating in the tow-in surf foil competition.
TOW-IN SURF FOIL COMPETITION
Head judge Alvaro Onieva explains to us what the judges were looking for in today’s tow-in surf foil competition.
“We were looking for good wave selection, commitment on the turns, variety, flow and speed. To see which rider could really combine all of these elements together,” said Alvaro. “We completed one whole round of men, and we hope to continue tomorrow morning if the conditions are suitable.”
There are still six days left for this event, so plenty of time to complete both the Surf-Freestyle and FreeFly-Slalom divisions.
