Understanding the World Tour structure

A clear structure!

Wingfoiling is a fastly growing sport, which means events are popping up on all different levels. From National to World Tour level, as well as continental championships and Qualifier Events. What is what? We’ll explain you all on this page!

The main elements

The main structure of the GWA Wingfoil World Tour can be found below. The expression disciplines Surf-Freestyle and Surf-Slalom can be found on the left, where the currently developed Race Class discipline can be found on the right!

With Surf-Freestyle, FreeFly-Slalom, Wave and Big Air the GWA Wingfoil World Tour runs four offical and spectacular expression disciplines, which are sanctioned as special events by World Sailing.

World Cups, Youth World Championships, Continental Championships, Challengers and Qualifying Series Events offer a wide range of competition formats for riders of different ages and levels.

Organizers of national events are welcome to enter into partnerships with the GWA Wingfoil World Tour and to use the GWA rulebook for their competitions.

The GWA Race Class is suspended until 2026. During this period, WingFoil Racing World Cups are exclusively run by the International Wing Sports Association (IWSA) and announced on wingfoilracing.com

GWA Qualifier Series (QS)

Surf-Freestyle & Surf-Slalom Qualifying Events

Launching in 2022, the Qualifying Series will offer a progressive, supporting structure for athletes, national wingfoil associations and youth development around the world.

At its core the QS Partnership Program will help national wingfoil associations launch and develop sustainably, while the Qualifying Series of events will offer an exciting opportunity for the most promising riders to go on to compete on the GWA Wingfoil World Tour throughout the 2023 season.

At the end of the 2022 season the top five ranked male and female riders in the Qualifying Series will qualify for the full GWA Wingfoil World Tour in 2023.

Future Projects

Race Class World Championships  & National Events

The GWA Race Class is currently working hard to build up the structure of Race Class events. Beside the existing Continental Championships;

  • European Championships
  • South American Championships
  • African Championships

the GWA Race Class aims to organize the GWA Race Class World Championships in the near future.

Also National Wingfoil Associations will be supported in organizing National Race Class Events.

More to come soon!

Compete at National level

Surf-Freestyle & Surf-Slalom National Events

From 2022 onwards the GWA will help you and National Wingfoil Events by listing them on our website. Find the dates, location and all features of the event on our National Events calendar.

Some of the National Events might be counting as part of the Qualifier Series as well, so you’ll see those appear in both calendars! The more athletes compete in those events, the bigger the chance they will qualify towards one of our World Cups!
